How to? A first timers guide to the gym

When joining a gym for the first time it can often feel overwhelming and intimidating. The fear of the unknown and not being educated in fitness can fill people with anxiety. Gym anxiety, it’s a thing.

  1. The first recommendation for someone who is completely new to fitness would be to sign up with a personal trainer. A personal trainer has helped countless people in the same position thrive in their fitness journey and they can do the same for you. They will educate you on exercise and nutrition so that when It comes to going it alone you have nothing to be afraid of.
  2. Plan your workouts. If you go the gym knowing exactly what you are going to be doing then there is less time for anxiety to kick in. Have it written down on a gympad or your phone and you’re ready to go.
  3. No one is watching you. Ok, you may get the odd glance but the truth is, most people are so consumed in their own workout that they don’t care what anyone else is doing. If you do come across someone who makes you feel uncomfortable, simply let a staff member know, move areas or onto a different exercise away from them.
  4. Wear your headphones. Sometimes it helps to cut the outside world off. Put you headphones in with your favourite music and forget everyone else exists. Walk in, get it done and walk out.
  5. Go with a friend. If you have someone who can be your gym buddy then it will certainly help you feel less anxious. Wether you do the full workout together or split off to do your own thing. Having someone you know in the gym will make you feel more comfortable.
  6. Exercise in off-peak hours. If you have some flexibility, it will be easier to get used to working out in a gym that isn’t full of people using most of the equipment. Get in when it’s quiet and you’ll find it much more enjoyable.
